FINISTERRE: THE END OF THE WORLD AND TRADITIONAL WAY TO FAREWELL THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO

The Romans believed they witnessed the sun’s demise as it sank into the Atlantic Ocean from this very location, and since then, Finisterre has held a special meaning for pilgrims. For many, it marks the conclusion of their Camino journey and the beginning of a transformative new chapter in their lives.

A Unique Pilgrimage Route

This route is distinct as it is the only trail that begins in Santiago de Compostela, leading you westward to the breathtaking Atlantic coast of Galicia. Over the course of four days, you will join fellow pilgrims in continuing the journey to the traditional endpoint of the Camino at Cape Finisterre (Fisterra).

Itinerary

As you leave the urban outskirts of Santiago, you will soon find yourself enveloped in a charming rural landscape. Once you arrive at Sarela de Abaxio, take a moment to admire the stunning view of Santiago, where the Cathedral soars majestically against the skyline.

This part of your adventure is truly captivating, with eucalyptus, oak, and pine trees lining the gently undulating paths. Make your way up to Alto do Vento (Wind Pass), the only challenge on today’s trek.

Following this, proceed through delightful villages until you arrive at the Tambre River. Cross the Ponte Maceira, an exquisite 14th-century bridge, before reaching the medieval town of Negreira.

Be sure to take some time to explore the Pazo do Cotón and the chapel of Saint Mauro.

Today presents the most challenging section of your journey, so be prepared for several steep inclines and stretches of asphalt roads along the way.

On a brighter note, you will be rewarded with stunning views of forests and meadows throughout your trek. As you stroll through picturesque villages, keep an eye out for traditional Galician granaries known as hórreos. These unique structures, crafted from stone or wood and raised on pillars, are used for crop storage and are a distinctive feature of rural Galician architecture, enhancing the beauty of the landscape.

As you make your way to Vilaserío and then onward to Santa Mariña, the terrain will remain consistently hilly. A particularly challenging ascent to Monte Aro awaits, which is the highest point along the Fisterra Camino. Take a moment to soak in the breathtaking panoramic views.

The trail then leads you past the Fervenza reservoir and Hospital, ultimately guiding you down into Olveiroa, where you’ll cross the Xallas River via the Ponte Olveiroa, marking the end of today’s journey.

You will primarily navigate gentle gravel paths that wind through tranquil open areas, guiding you to Alto do Cruceiro da Armada.

Here, you will have your first view of the ocean, particularly the stunning bay of Fisterra. Following this, brace yourself for a steep descent into Cee, and then embark on a journey to the delightful, heritage-listed village of Corcubión, where you will spend the night.

Prepare for a breathtaking finale to your Camino de Santiago journey!

Enjoy stunning views over Cape Fisterra as you pass through San Roque and descend to Estorde.

We will walk alongside the coast at Sardiñeiro and Langosteira Beach – an extraordinary experience to walk on soft sand rather than solid ground before arriving at the lively village of Fisterra.

From the village, it’s about a 4km trek to the Lighthouse, where you will find the 00.00 marker for the Camino de Santiago. If the sky is clear, make sure to plan your visit around sunset; the view will be absolutely breathtaking!

We will enjoy your final breakfast on the Camino de Santiago.

It’s a bittersweet occasion where you will bid farewell while stepping into the world, your heart brimming with cherished memories and equipped with the gifts from your journey along the Camino.

You can choose to stay longer of book a bus to take you back to Santiago and on to onwards travel.

Why walk a pilgrimage?

When you walk the slow pilgrim way, it is not just getting there, it’s actually getting to see and experience every single place you go through. If you are the type of person who’s just curious about the world, about how different people live, then walking is perfect!

It takes you through busy streets, quiet areas, remote paths and high breathtaking peaks – it can show you things you did not know you wanted to see, and the whole scope of the world and its citizens unfolds before you. Smells, views, tastes and sounds – all your senses are heightened the more you move.

A pilgrim walk is an ancient walk, and you will come across such roads and paths that can feel more important than their destinations – the beauty, history and sense of calm just overwhelms.

It gives you time to think and to breathe – it’s not just for your physical health, but mental too.

Your body and mind get into a rhythm – it’s like your brain slows down to mirror the steady beat of your feet. Join a pilgrim walk and you might just be able get away – and get your mind, body and soul together.

With walking – it is not the distance that’s the achievement, where you start, or finish doesn’t matter – it’s the sense of achievement that comes from just doing it!

The key is just starting – once you move forward you won’t ever look back!

I am rapt that you may choose to walk on the Wildlime side with me!

Cheers,
